The examiner tells the teams about the rules of the test. She says that the teams will each be given reels (books). Since there are 26 teams in all, there will be 13 books of heaven and 13 books of land. To pass the test, a team must have both books of heaven and land and go to the tower, which is in the center of the forest, 10 kilometers from each of the doors, within five days. In this test, the teams are allowed to kill their opponents to get the other book. The test starts and teams rush to find their opponents. The team of Hyuuga Hinata and her companions set up a trap and defeats an opponent team with leeches and a trap net.

The examinees now gather before the Forest of Death, where the second test will be conducted. But then, Konohamaru and the other kids suddenly show up. They told Naruto that they were sent from the Academy to make a report on the Mid-Ninja Exam. The examiner gave them a 10-minute break and were instructed to cooperate with the kids. They interviewed Naruto who kept talking mostly about himself, a little about Sasuke, how Sakura really likes him, his teacher Iruka, and his trainer Kakashi. Sakura talked mostly about techniques and Sasuke. Sasuke talks about how everyone relies on him all the time.

The examiner then declares the 10th question, and gives the rules about it. He says that students may choose to take it or not. If they choose not to take it, then they are edged out along with their group. If they choose to take it, but get the wrong answer, they won’t be allowed to take the test ever again. Several more students give up. Then all of a sudden, Naruto raises his hand as well. But then, he slams it on the table and declares he won’t give up trying. The examiner declares that all who are left in the room have passed. The 10th question tests if a ninja can do a mission without hesitation even if it proves too hard. The examiner for the 2nd round then enters and declares that she will eliminate half of them.
